How was your weekend?  We went out yesterday to the pumpkin patch.  Hubby and the kids wanted a 200 pound pumpkin but I stood my ground and let them get a little one.  After all, I'll be the one that has to move it after it's done it's time on the front porch.

I've noticed that some of my fave bloggers do monthly recaps, and I love to read them because there seems to always be something i've missed.

So lucky you, I'm going to start doing them too because I have a bunch of new readers (welcome by the way!).

So this what I've been up to in September.

Phew.  Although, I didn't think I had done very much, I actually did quite bit {pats back}.

Do you do monthly re-cap? I would love to see yours.
Post link in comments please.

Fall Mantel

This time of year is always a little bitter sweet for me.  I love Fall, I really do, but I know that just around the corner will be a bitter cold winter. So I try to embrace it as much as I can.

In order to get me in the mood, I did a little Fall decorating in the house.  Just a little.

I have two fireplaces on my main floor, but only one with a mantel. This is the one in the dining room.

Oh look,  I replaced the dining room fixture.  I found that one at Goodwill (of course I did) for $7.00.  It's not what I envision in the space but it's better than what we had in there.

For my little update I used things I already had.

The mirror lived in my old living room  for awhile.

The wooden vases, I've had forever.

The candle holder was a gift from BFF many birthdays ago.

The little brass vase was a Goodwill score for a $1.00 with some random flowers and feathers I had in my stash.
That bowl was a Goodwill score from yesterday.  It was $2.00! On the bottom it says Burled Maple. I've seen bowls like this at Homesense for $30.  It screams Fall to me for some reason.

Here is a close up.

Isn't it pretty?

And a final shot of the mantel again.

Using things I already had and spent $3.00 at Goodwill, and I like my Fall update.

So are you a Fall person? Do you embrace or deal with it? Any Fall decorating going on at your house?

I'm linking up at Thrifty Decor Chick Mantel Party. Place of My Taste "Work It Wednesday", Happy Housie, Rain on a Tin Roof.

Going Bolder

When I revealed my foyer with it's bold black colour, something still didn't sit right with me.  The table wasn't working for me.  I've been looking for a replacement for that table for awhile, but could never find anything I could afford liked.  In one of the comments, someone made a suggestion, and a light bulb went off.

I've been having a love affair with green lately and even started a Pinterest Board, just because I'm so into it right now.
Green and gold and black. What's not to love.

Do you remember what the space looked like when we moved in?  Here's a reminder.
It was boring beige with no personality and a lovely boob light (which is still there by the way).

I picked up the table at The Bombay Company on super clearance about 7 or 8 years ago.
When we re-did our kitchen in the last house 6 years ago, the table fell one day, and cracked.

So the poor thing had been living in our basement after that.

Here's a progression picture of the foyer area, what it looked like when we first moved in, and now.

I think it's pretty darned funky and completely out of my comfort zone, but I like it.

Here's one final shot... just because I love it so.

What do you think of green? Love it or hate it? Would you have taken the chance and painted an old table?

Friday Five

It's been a long week.  Kids were sick. And now I'm sick again.  Of course I am.

But, nothing like some eye-canding to make me feel better.

On with the show...

1.  I'm not sure you can tell from this pic, but the mirror says "... fairest of them all." How great is that.

Check out Dwellings by Devore for more pics on bathroom make-over.  Gorgeous!

2.  I Fall on my mind, and the Yellow Cape Cod, is beautifully decorated for Fall.

3. Big thanks to "A Pretty Life in the Suburbs" and "Momnivore's Dilemma"for featuring my very dark Foyer this week.

And the lovely Aimee At Refresh- Renew nominated me for a Liebster award.
There are some things I have to do to accept the award, so I'll post about that next week.
It needs it's own post.

4.  GREEN!  I'm loving green lately, see what I mean?  Anything green and gold is catching my attention.

5. And Speaking of Green.  I'm hoping this is dry enough to show you on Monday.

Well, I'm off to watch paint dry, what are you up to this weekend?

How to "fake" a Flowering Orchid

Remember the little bar cart set-up I showed you yesterday?

See the Orchid plant? Pretty aren't they?

Well, the orchid leaves are real... but the flower part is not.

After my orchid stopped blooming, I went to Michael's and picked up a couple of Orchid flowers and stuck them in the pot with the leftover leaves.

I think I paid 5 or 6 dollars for the two stems.
(They were on sale for 50% off, but I was prepared to use my 40% off coupon if they weren't on sale.)

I've noticed that the stalks remaining from the previous blooms has a little  growth on it, so I'm assuming new flowers are on their way, but until then, I'll enjoy the fake.

I think they look very real.  Don't you?

So, have I inspired you to "fake it" until you make it?

Sorry I couldn't help myself ;)

Bar Cart

Last Friday, I hinted about a purchase that I made that I was really excited about, and then yesterday I told you about some art that I had made.  Well, today, I will show you the entire thing.

If you guessed that my little purchase was a bar cart, then you were right!

There is a funny story, behind this bar cart purchase.  I had been stalking it at Goodwill for about 1 week befor I bought.  I came home and showed a few examples to hubby, here, here, and here.

He liked the idea of storing all of our booze stuff in one place,
but I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money (it was $20).

It seemed that every where I looked, my favourite bloggers had a bar cart.  So I waffled back and forth, but I kept seeing the bar cart in the store when I stop in.  It was calling to me.  Until one day when I walked into Goodwill and the price had dropped on it. hmmm...

It was down to $5.00!!  I've seen them on websites for about $100- $300.  So I went over and checked it out to see how sturdy it was.  It was wobbly. And when I tried to move it.  When the wheels fell off, I heard a voice from behind me,  "Well I guess you bought it now." I turned around to see the sweetest looking old guy standing their with his cane.   So I did what any girl would do and said "I guess I did, smiled and grabbed the price ticket, went and paid for it.  I guess you can say the old guy made the decision for me.  Of course in my head I was thinking I just bought a dud and made a $5 donation to Goodwill.

So I paid for it, and drove around to the pick-up door to pick up my purchase.  Through the doors, I could see the clerk wheeling the bar cart down the aisle towards the glass doors.  And the wheels fell off.  At this point, I pretty much wanted to drive away and leave it behind.  But I waited for the clerk to pick up all the pieces that had fallen off and carry the cart towards where I waiting.  He apologized and handed me the cart which was now in pieces.

So are you still with me?  At this point I was convinced I had picked a broken piece of you-know-what.  But, being stubborn, I dragged all the pieces into the house, grabbed the tool box, and put it all back together.  As it turns out, all it needed was to tighten all the screws.  It is solid now.  No wobbling at all.  I mean, I still wouldn't be wheeling it around the house, but it's quite sturdy.

I cleaned it all up and added all the boozy stuff that we had on hand, and I'm in love with it.  I'm not a drinker at all, but I like having everything organize in one spot.

Above it, I added some art work Haley made years ago, my smile art and some scrapbooking paper that   ties in all the colours.  I'm working on something for the other side of the dining room and will show you next week.  Just waiting for paint to dry.

So for $5,  I added colour to a blank area of my dining room.

Before - After
In the end, I'm glad the old guy was there to "force" me to buy the bar cart, cause I think it looks lovely.

So what do you think? Would you have bought it right away or waited for a sweet old man to "make" you buy it? Or do you think it's much 1980's look?

Follow along Facebook.

I'm linking up here, here, and here.

Hey! Hey ! Hey!

Well I'm in the midst of projects overload!  I swear everywhere I turn there are projects waiting to be completed! I have lots to show you, but each one is missing something before I can say it's done.

Except for this one.

This one, took a couple of hours this weekend because I had to let things dry before I could put all the pieces back together.  But other than that it was quick and easy. Just how I like them. (get your mind out of the gutter)

I've seen these art pieces everywhere with the gold letters.  You can see some here. But since I'm impatient and crafty, I wanted to create my own. Kind of like this.

I used a black frame with mat that I had picked up a goodwill at some point, Martha Stewart Gold Metallic Paint, and some chipboard letters from my scrapbooking stash.

The mat that was in my frame had a pale creamy inner liner that just wasn't doing it for me, so I paint it with MS gold paint.  Then I painted each letter (twice) and let them dry.

When all of the paint was dry, I glued the letters on to white cardstock that had been cut to fit in my frame and then put the whole kit and caboodle back together.

See... easy peasy.

And I really like it.

It makes me SMILE.

This picture just doesn't do it justice.  It has just a little bit of shimmer when the light catches it.

I'll show you tomorrow, where it ended up.  I just need to take some good pictures of the space.

So whadya think? Does it make you smile?

p.s. - This post is NOT sponsored by Martha, I just love her stuff.  But Martha if you want to sponsor a future post, call me. lol.  Pffft.  As if she reads my blog.

I'm linking up at Inspiration Monday.

How to add the Pinterest Pin Button on your Blog

Hey all!

So last week's not feeling well, turned into a doozy of a migraine over the weekend. (Eating half a large  bag of Smartfood popcorn might have something to do it.) Anyways, I didn't get any painting done in the master bedroom  like I had planned, 'cause I was too busy "trying not to move." But I will be doing that this week, I hope. hmmm... or maybe it was that green that gave me the migraine.

Anyways I added a little Pinterest Pin button to the images on my blog and I wanted to share it with you.

Let me preface this with "I don't know what the heck I'm doing when it come to blog design.  But I'm trying and I'm smart enough to look up people who know what the heck they they are doing." And now, that I got that off my chest, on with this post.

Over the last little while I've noticed that some of my fave bloggers had a pin button over the gorgeous pictures on their blogs.

Kind of like this.... (put your cursor over the picture below).

Did you see the "PIN IT" button appear?

Go ahead try it again... I'll wait.

So here's how I added Pin Button to my Blogger blog. These instructions are directly from Pinterest.

(At the bottom of this post I include links to smarter people, with their instructions.)

1.  I went to my already created Pinterest account... and signed in.

2.  On the plus sign beside my name (that turns into a red box when I put my cursor on it) red box is a drop down menu like below.

3.  Click on the last item on menu "The Pin it button".  It says it is "the easiest way to pin things from around the web." It truly was!! Super easy!

4.   Next up you have to look for  the following.  Scroll about half way down your page until you find it. And then click on the "Pin it" button that they have circled.

5.  At this point you can go through and read all of the awesome information they have on there.  I was only interested on the "pin it" button for my images, so I went straight for the widgets.

On the left hand side of your screen... you will see the following. Pick Widget Builder.

6.  You will now have to choose what you want from the list below.  They have quite a variety of choices.

7. Once you have picked the widget you want to add (in my case the "image hover") click through to get your code with instructions on where to place it on your template html script.

Then you save the template again, go back to your live blog.  And your widget should be there, (in my case "Pin It" button).

Let's look at the pretty picture again, shall we?

(Feel free to pin this picture of a little vignette in my office area. Can't wait to show you the entire area)

Well, I hope that helped (a little). Or did I confuse you even more? I hope not.

Here are some super smart chicks who KNOW what they are talking about.

  • Blogger Sentral - she also gives you a links for cool Pinterest icons.
  • Kevin and Amanda -This one, gives you infor on it for adding it to a self-hosted Wordpress blog.
  • Code it Pretty - She gives you the pros and cons for the different buttons.

So what did you guys think of having the "Pin It" buttons pop up over an image when you hover over the image?  Does it make it easier to pin things or just annoy the patootie out of you?

Here's my Pinterest link to follow me.  Shameless I know! ; )
