DIY: Turn a Placemat into a Pillow

how to turn a placemat into an accent pillow

The other day when I was strolling through Target I came accross a random placemat that was on clearance for $1.37.  There was only one of them.  So I grabbed it, I knew exactly what to do with it.  Turn my lonely placemat into a Spring accent pillow.

Here is the placemat.  See... $1.37! The colours remind me of spring with all the flowers and vines and all.

So this is what I did...

1. Make an opening in the side of the pillow with a seam ripper tool.

  • Make sure that the opening is wide enough to fit your pillow insert. Or if you are just using Pillow- fill, make sure it's wide enough to fit your hand in there.

2. Use a simple backstitch to close your pillowcase.

Yes, that is my attempt at a extreme-close-up. #fail

But you get the idea.

Here is my pillow.

It has some stichwork on the flowers.  I think it looks pretty. Doesn't look like a placemat anymore does it?

Since I already had the thread and pillow insert, this project cost me... wait for it... $1.37. Kapchow!! I wish all my projects cost me $1.37.

Here's where I threw my new little pillow. A corner chair that was needing some colour.

A little Spring spruce up in that little corner. It does look Springy doesn't it?
