Big Boy Bedroom - Progress

changing baby nursery to big boy room

Although it wasn't on my to-do list for 2014, one of the things I needed to address this year, was my son's bedroom.  One night last week, as we were having our nightly-before-bed chat, he says to me "Mom... is this a baby's room?" and I said "no, it's your room! Why?" and he said, "well, their was a baby in here before and you said you were gonna paint it and you haven't yet." Doh!

Valentine's Day Bookmark

How to make a Valentine's Day Book mark. Perfect gift for a little reader!

My little guy loves to read!  I like to think he gets it from me.  I love getting lost in a good book too.

This week he came home and told me he was now reading Chapter Books.  He said only a few kids in his class had moved up to Chapter books and he was one of them.  He was very proud, and I was proud of him.  He told me he needed a book mark to keep track of the page he was on.  I went into my drawer and found him one with penguins on it.  He wasn't impressed with it, but it was a bookmark.

So while he was at school I decided to make him his own book mark!

This is how I did it.

Tic Tac Toe Game {Pottery Barn Inspired}

How to DIY Tic Tac Toe Board Game

At our house we try to encourage playing that does not involve video games.  My little guy loves to play tic tac toe.  He is always with paper and pen looking for someone to play with him, and usually someone will.

Organizing: Linen Closet

How to organize a closet in 5 easy steps!
I hope you all had a super weekend! We celebrated my nephew's 4th Birthday yesterday! AND I may or may not have snuck away to go to Ikea (after last weeks failed attempt). In my defence I live two hours a way so I need to take advantage when I'm in the area. :)

Organizing: Solving the Powder Room Storage Problem

Hey you guys!

When I showed you my Powder Room update last year one thing that I didn't mention was how it was also my oldest daughter's main bathroom.  She showers in the kids bath, but does everything else in this room.  With three kids getting ready in the morning it works for us.  But since this is also the bathroom that our guests use, I wanted to make sure the room stayed tidy. I was finding she was leaving "her stuff" lying around on the counter.  Not good.  So I thunk and thunk and came up with this little solution.

RECIPE: Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus

Hey all!

The temperatures have certainly dropped again in my neck of the woods.  When that happens, I start thinking about food.  The other day, I wanted to put together a quick appetizer for hubby and I, and I remembered my Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus recipe.  Fortunately I had all the ingredients on hand. It has been a while since I made it, and hubby was happy about it.  So happy, that when I snuck back into the fridge the next day to get myself some more... they were all gone. >:(

They are so simple to make, and yet so darned good.

Thanks to everyone who entered the Bloggiversary Giveaway  of the Handmade Pouch last week.  It was my first one for 2014, and I hope it's not the last. ;)

I asked the entrants to comment and what they would like to see more of on the blog and this is  the feedback that I received.

Master Bedroom - Progress

Hey all!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I drove two hours to Ikea, only to get there and have the fire alarm go off and I had to leave.  It was a good thing I was going there anyways to say goodbye to my parents who were leaving to go to Europe, or I would have been really ticked off.

Anyhow, A few months ago I shared with you my inspiration for my Master Bedroom .  I desperately wanted to get rid of the green, although I kept in the kids bathroom, there was no way I was going to live with it in the bedroom.

This project actually took place a few months ago, but I was distracted by all the cookies I was baking and Christmas decor that I never go around to showing you.

So here it goes...

I end up going with Benjamin Moore's Coventry Gray, and I am so glad I did.  It is such a soothing colour.

Although I didn't think I was going to replace the duvet cover, when I found this one at Homesense one day, I went for it.  The only thing, that bugs me is that it wrinkles easily.

In my original Inspiration board, I was thinking of painting the dresser black, but now, I'm wondering if I should.  Do you think it will be too much black?

I like the contrast of the wood against the grey wall.

Would you paint it or just refinish it?  The finish is pretty beat up, but its a really solid piece.

So here is my original Inspiration Board: (You can see some sources here)

Next thing I want to address in this room are the side tables.

You can see in inspiration board above that I thought of removing the bottom drawer and painting the whole thing white.  But then I saw this from sohosonnet.com and I about died.  It remind me of my entry table.

It looks so much like my little side tables it's crazy.

I played around with my photos and Sonnet's table  and this what I got... What do you think?

Anyhow, here is a  Before-After, cause I know we all like to see those.  I am so glad that green is gone. So so glad.

I still have to get curtains for the room.  I have my eye on these from Target.

So, peeps, I need your advice.. Paint dresser black or keep it wood stain? Paint side table white or green?

Top 5 PINS of December

So who's on Pinterest? Or should I ask "who's NOT on Pinterest?"  I've recently started using my Pinterest Board more and more to find recipes and find inspiration.

But I recently also realized that Pinterest has been awesome for bringing traffic to my little blog.

Since we're almost half way through January, I thought it would be cool to share which 5 Pinterest Pins brought the most  traffic to my little blog in December 2013.  By the way, thanks to all who pinned my recipes and crafts and posts.  The Pinning love is very much appreciated!

1.  Holiday Meatballs

2. Sharpie Markers

Home Goals & Inspiration 2014!

Well, it's that time of year to start making plans for what I'm planning on doing with the house this year. Last years list, pretty much got thrown out the window when a few months later we decided to move.  It's ok, because now I get to make a new list.  :)

I always tend to add too much to my list and then on December 31st, feel like I didn't accomplish what I set out to do during the year.

I've shown here, what some of the plans were, and I'm still focusing on those. I've made a little of progress on master bedroom, which I'll show you soon. Everything else is the same.

So I thought for the sake of my sanity I would only pick 3 main things to get done  in 2014, and of I do more then it's a bonus.

1.  KITCHEN!

BEFORE - pics of when we looked at the house the first time!

Oh where do I begin with this kitchen.

  1. Too much wood going on in this room!
  2. The island is too small for my family!
  3. Very little/awkward storage!

THE PLAN!

1. PAINT THE DOORS!

Inspiration:

SOURCE VIA
What I love about this one is the crispness of the white cabinets and the darker bottom.

2. LARGE ISLAND!

Inspiration:

SOURCE VIA
This island (minus the stovetop) is what I have in mind for my island.  Drawers in the middle, door on one side and move microwave into the island and add extra outlets. I also want the contrast of darker island.

3. Have a pantry installed on other side of window.

2. STAIRCASE!

  • Remove carpet, and refinish the wood.

Before picture from when we saw the house

Inspiration:

I love the white spindles and darker banister and on  the threads on the staircase.

3. UPPER HALLWAY!

This is what the area looked like when we saw the house

And then it looked like this for a bit.

THINGS TO DO!

  • ORGANIZE! ORGANIZE!  New Filling cabinet, printer stand. New desk.
  • Shelves above desk.
  • paint accent wall.
  • New Chair.

I can't seem to find a inspiration pic that I like, so I'll leave you with the awful pic.  I hope it doesn't give you nightmares.

What are you plans for your home this year?
And where do you find inspiration from?
